Right Tool for the Job - Matthew 5:1-20

No one measures time with a tape measure or temperature with a measuring cup—they are the wrong tools for the job. Similarly, seeking and experiencing God through our own expectations is the wrong tool for the job. Judgment and envy of others distract us from the grace God has shown us. Peter asks Jesus, “Look, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we receive?” Jesus responds with a parable in which those who worked all day receive what they were promised, but become angry when those who worked only one hour receive the same amount. Their outrage is not that they received too little, but that someone else received more. The owner asks why they are angry, noting that he is generous. Jesus reveals a God who fulfills promises and exceeds expectations—a God whose way is extravagant generosity, grace rather than judgment, and a love we cannot earn or deserve. The question for our hearts, lives, and faith is whether we will seek to experience God's great generosity toward us and, as a result, live generously, with the abundance of God’s grace filling every corner of our lives and overflowing for the sake of others.
